Teach Diligently To Your Children

by Dan on April 23, 2009

The most important thing we can do as believers is teach others. Everyone is at a different level of spiritual maturity, but that should not keep up from sharing what we learn from God’s Word. God’s Word was given to us to read and study ourselves, but we also use it to teach others in His ways. This is especially true for parents. We are commanded to teach our children about God, but it is interesting to read how and when we are to teach:

6 “And these words which I command you today shall be in your heart. 7 You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up. - Deuteronomy 6:6-7

The first thing I see here is that we should have God’s Word in our heart first! How can we expect to teach if we do not know God’s Word? This is not simply studying a passage that morning, then teaching what we can remember from our cram session. Having God’s Word in our heart is a process, and is shown by how we live, how we study and Who we depend on.

The second thing I see is that we are to teach diligently. Diligent means constant, persistant. That is how we are to teach God’s Word to our children. It’s not the churches resposibility to teach of children, it’s ours. And we are to do it every day! Consistent, constant, persistant.

The last thing I see here is when. All day! Every day! When we are at the table, when we are out doing our daily business, before they go to bed, and when they wake up. That sounds like all day to me! Our kids should be absorbed by God’s Word all day long. Now I know what you are thinking, how can I possibly do that? Carry a Bible everywhere I go? Nope. Here are a few ways I know how:

  1. By living God’s Word through your life your kids can drink for your overflowing cup.
  2. By sending them to a private Christian school. This puts them in a Christian environment all day long while at school and they will be taught a Christian World View.
  3. Homeschooling. This is what we have chosen to do. Our family can pick and teach whatever curriculum we feel lead to do, the children are not influenced by anything from the outside world while at school, and we are able to teach them Biblically all things of this world. Because who created science, math, history and all things? God.

Teaching our children is a Biblical commandment. We are to teach our children about who God is and what He says everyday, all day long! How will you answer this call? I’ll leave you with this verse:

“Train up a child in the way he should go, And when he is old he will not depart from it.” – Provers 22:6
