Last night in Men’s Fraternity, we talked about either living our lives under the shadow of the first Adam, or walking in the light of the Second Adam. You have a choice, and you can’t live in the middle. Staying 100% focused on Christ leads us to live a life walking in His light. Part of staying focused on Christ is daily prayer, bible reading and study. Spiritual disciplines. Not only does this keep our relationship with Christ very strong and healthy, but I also offers us something else. Here is how the wisest man of all time tells it:
“If the ax is dull,
And one does not sharpen the edge,
Then he must use more strength;
But wisdom brings success." – Ecclesiastes 10:10
Let’s examine this verse. Our spiritual lives are like an ax, ready anytime for the Lord’s work. To sharpen it, we must hold true to the spiritual disciplines the Bible calls us to. If I do not do these things, my ax becomes dull, and it requires more and more effort to accomplish the result that is needed. For some, this turns normal living for Christ into a chore, because their spiritual axes aren’t sharp. More effort to do God’s plan leads to a dissatisfaction with the Christian life and then they give up. Keep your ax sharp! Because from that, comes wisdom, and wisdom brings success. The pursuit of success is not what Solomon is saying it, it’s the pursuit of living holy that brings about wisdom, and you can never fail when you are focused on Christ. His wisdom is an incredibly powerful tool to be blessed with.
